| 310 | Jacob is the first born son of Maria Anna Schmidt and John Zender of Rockenburger Hof, Germany......... He was conceived on or about 15 May 1840 as his 21 yr old Mother was about to depart Germany, with her parents, via the Clipper Ship "France" from LeHavre, France...... His mother could only have discovered she was pregnant during the voyage with her partents, Johann Peter Schmidt(Sr) and Maria Bruck Schmidt...... Jacob was born 15 Feb 1841...........He had to have been born in NY because his mother did not leave there until late in 1841. (She would not have traveled to the unknown frontier in her pregnancy nor when the baby was first born) "the Schmidt's stayed in NY a year before coming to Chicago": Louisa Smith Schmidt Fortmann, 1947....................Now we know why......... There seems to be no record of a marriage in NY and thus it is reasonable to assume that John Zender was not present or there would have been a "shotgun" wedding in those days...............There is no record of a marriage, found as yet in Chicago, since 9 miles North of Chicago was Frontier in 1842 and there was no Catholic Church until 1851 (St Henry's). The marriage was probably performed by Fr. Fortmann, traveling priest, at the log cabin of Johann Peter Schmidt(Sr)upon the arrival of John Zender in September 1842..........History books also record that religious services were performed in the area at the wooden 2-story house of Peter Schmidt(Jr) which was probably built about 1844. Jacob's sister Anna Maria Zender is born 15 Jul 1843. John Zender is therefore in Chicago no later than early October 1842. Upon the Schmidt's landing in New York on 27 July 1840 you can bet a letter went back to Germany ordering John Zender's appearance and this is probably why: ......John Zender..."left Germany without having the necessary consent from the authorities." | 311 | "left Germany without having the necessary consent from the authorities........... This fact makes it very difficult to trace this individual's movements......... Evanston, Illinois Census of 13 June 1860 shows "John (Johann) 'Senter'" (Zender) and his family. Listed after John are wife, Maria (Maria Anna Schmidt), children: Jacob, Anna Maria, Peter, John L., Lorenz and Maria........ John's birth year is noted as approximately 1813." | Zender Johann
