  	Obituary of Mrs. Smith (Barbara) wife of Jacob Schmidt,( b. 7 Jun 1824 Malborn Prussia Germany. Obit located in Aspen Colorado 10/26/05 by Emma Basalt. "Mrs Smith came with her husband and children to Pitkin County in 1882, and has lived in this vicinity ever since that time." "Shortly after coming to Ashcroft, her husband was killed, and for the last 16 years she has lived with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Sellingausen." At that time, 1870's, Ashcroft was a big mining town. Ashcroft is part of Pitkin County and today a ghost town east of Aspen. Aspen Weekly Times...Pitkin County...Aug 26 1882 THE DEADLY REVOLVER JACOB SMITH OF OHIO CREEK IS KILLED BY THE ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF A PISTOL On the road between Ashcroft and Crested Butte, near where the Tam O'Shanter trail branches off is a spring. Its water is so clear and pure that the traveler seldom passes without stooping down to drink. At this spot on last Wednesday there was a scene that made tears to flow from the eyes of men whose hearts had almost become hardened. It was the hasty calling of a soul to the other world. Mr. Jacob Smith, a man who resided on Ohio Creek about 15 miles from Gunnison City, was returning from a trip down Roaring Fork, where he had been on a visit to his son, Charles A. Smith, our esteemed fellow-citizen. One of our townsmen, Mr. C.A. Hallam, had accidentally joined at the fork of the road, about one-half mile from Aspen. The two road side by side until they reached South Ashcroft. Mr. Smith proceeded on toward his home, while Mr. Hallam made a stop in town. He remained in Ashcroft a short time before he proceeded. Arriving at the spring, Mr. Hallam saw a crowd of men bending over a prostrated form. His surprise can only be imagined when he found that his companion, whom he had left a few minutes before, full of life and vigor, with hopes of seeing his loving family before sunset, lay in the arms of death. He bent over the dying man and learned from his last breath that he had dismounted to drink at the spring, and when, in the act of stooping, his forty-five calibre pistol fell from his pocket and discharged, the ball entering his right side just below the last rib, passing through his body and coming out the left side. His voice grew weak and in a few moments he lay dead. Charles A. Smith, his son, who was on Rock Creek at the time of the accident, was speedily notified, but was unable to reach the scene in time.   		1840 United States Port of Entry: Castle Garden, New York Located on the Southwestern tip of Manhatten, Long Island, New York this is the port of entry through which Johann Peter Schmidt, his wife Maria Bruck, his sons, Peter and Jacob and his daughter Maria Anna entered the United States on July 27, 1840 from the US Clipper, "France". There was no immigration facility here in 1840 (it came into existence in 1851) and thus the gang-plank was lowered; an officer of the ship gave a US official the Passenger Manifest (Congress passed that legal requirement in 1830) and away the voyagers went into New York.

Note the significant height differences between Peter and Jacob-this suggests fraternal brothers since they have the same birth date.
  		Page 3 of Johnann Peter Schmidt's Passport Issued in Trier, Germany on 2 May 1840 to Johann Peter(Sr) and showing his wife Maria (Bruck), Twin Sons: Peter(Jr) and Jacob, and his daughter Anna (Maria Anna). It shows a 15 Grs Stamp and a 20 Grs "Passage Permit" fee. Additional stamps show departure stamps for LeHavre, France with French permissions. Departure was mid to late May or very early June. The 10,000 mile sea journey would take them to England, Calais, Brest, the Grand Canary Islands off Africa, the Cape Verde Islands also off Africa, thence 2500 miles across (21 days) to the southern Carribean in the vicinity of Puerto Rico, then Bermuda, landing in New York abt. 55 after deprature from LeHavre. Their route approximates that of hurricanes forming off Africa and moving toward the US and up its East Coast.
  		Crest........at main Road into Malborn, Germany The Johann Peter Schmidt(Sr)and Maria Bruck children were all born in this villiage between 1812 and 1826. These children were: Elizabeth Barbara, Johannes Peter, Anna Maria, Maria Anna, Jacob, Peter(Jr), and Johannes. In late May 1840, Maria Anna, Jacob and Peter would depart with their parents from here for LeHavre, New York and settle in Chicago in May 1842
