	I, Dirich, am the eldest Son in my father's line and with his death inherit the Land-Lease Rights to the Kleine Fortmann (small farm)adjacent to my cousin's on the Gross Fortmann Farm. We are "Die Leibeigenen" {the Serfs} and work the land at the pleasure of our Lord Delgallo, the master of Brettburg Castle, north and adjacent to the Fortmann Farms. It has been so for as long as anyone can remember. We think it is so since 1348, the time of "The Great Pestilence" [Black Death,] Gr. Gr. Great Grandfather Fortmann's time and guess that it has been so since the 1200's at least.

	It is late Fall and Winter is approaching. The wind is singing in the Linden trees. The harvest has been bountiful and it is in the barn for the winter feeding of the animals. Our 6 horses are healthy and the cattle, pigs and chickens are well sheltered in the smaller barn and coops. When the snows come we have adequate feed till spring. Our dirt roads will be impassable for most of the winter. The stream on the north side, with its ford to the Gross Fortman Farm flows all winter and is most adequate for us and our animals.

Prior to 314 AD, the year Roman Emperor Constantine, in Trier, Germany, 120 miles SW of here, declared Christianity the religion of the Empire, Kleine Fortmann Ancestors in the Lohne area belonged to the Germanic Tribe known by the Romans as Cheruscians. They were known for their independence and had destroyed the 17th, 18, and 19th Roman Legion (20,000)men, women and children between 12 and 15 Sep, 9 CE. Christian missionaries converted them around 400-500 AD. And they remained Catholic throughout the Reformation, 1550, initiated by Martin Luther. Again, Independence.
