	Possible death entries from Pastore Suttholt's St Gertrud Record: p.128 - 27 Feb [1779] Herbert Fortman 57 [b. abt 1722] p.236 - 25 Feb 1807 Herman Hen [Heinrich] Fortman; [calculated birth date 1722] p.250 - 21 Feb 1810 Herm.[Herman] Hen [Heinrich]: Fortman viduus 68; [birth date 1742] since there are several Herbert Fortmann's in the GROSSfortmann line (23 Nov 1794 and 29 Oct 1831) it is more probable that the correct Herman Heinrich is the 25 Feb 1807.... beacause the 21 Feb 1810 Herman would have only been 22 years of age at his daughter Anna Maria's birth and since German males of this period married about 26 he would have been 21 when he sired her. The Father, Wilhelm Wilke would have been 36 when 1807 was born versus 46 when 1810 was born, rather late for a 1st born son. 1807 is more probable.

		The GrossFortman Farm, 1100 Meters NW of the KleineFortmann Farm Seperated in 1200-1400 by a stream from a spring. The stream in visible under the line of trees seperating the farms. The original Furt Mann starting the Fortmann Farm most probably resided here from 1100 to 1200. The village of Loan (Lohne) is first recorded in 890 AD. Prior to 314 AD, the year Roman Emperor Constantine, in Trier, Germany, 120 miles SW of here, declared Christianity the religion of the Empire, Kleine Fortmann Ancestors in the Lohne area belonged to the Germanic Tribe known by the Romans as Cheruscians. They were known for their independence and had destroyed the 17th, 18, and 19th Roman Legion (20,000)men, women and children between 12 and 15 Sep, 9 CE. Notes

It is June 8, 1783 and a massive volcanic eruption splits Iceland in its midst spewing sulphuric fumes into the stratosphere. Within 3 days the northwesterly winds off the North Sea have delivered clouds of sulphuric acid high over Germany and they rain down sulphuric acid on the Fortmann farms.

None of this is however known to the Fortmann's nor can they concieve the effect this will have on future generations who, two generations from now, 55 years in the future, will start to migrate to the United States. All they know is that life is getting tougher.

The winters of 1783, 1784 and 1785 are bitterly cold. The crops of these years are stunted and very poor. Famine lurks in the countryside.

Hermann Heinrich Fortmann, age 49, and his wife Anna Elizabeth Kathmann Fortmann struggle to feed the family. And, while they cannot know it, their 19 year old daughter Anna Maria {they have no sons] shall inherit the farm and will become the Grandmother of the three KleineFortmann's, Anna Maria, Heinrich, and Clemens who shall migrate to the United States 55 years from now in 1838.
