The name comes from the German word "furt" meaning "a man who lives by poling rafts across shallow water". ........The earliest peoples of the area were of the "Cheruscian Tribe"....lived as animal herders (pigs and cattle) in the forests and grew oats and rye on raised dry land. ........They were known for their independence.
