• Photos		1847 Wilhelm Fortmann from Oldenburg Wilhelm was associated with the development of the 1st Gas Works in Oldenburg, Germany in 1847. Wilhelm is not a known relative.
  		1857 Oldenburg, Germany, the new Gas Works Oldenburg was one of the 1st 30 Cities in Germany to have a gas works. On May 24th 1853 Wilhelm Fortman and Ernst Gottlieb Buesing, plumber-master, signed a contract with the mayor of Oldenburg, Herr Woebken, for the construction of this plant. Wilhelm had taken the idea from a visit to England.

This happened as the Chauci Tribe joined with the Romans against the Cheruscian Tribe of Arminius. Both sides suffered grievous losses but the Romans were victorious even though Arminius himself and Inviomerus, his uncle, managed to escape with the bulk of their army in tact. "according to Tacitus".
  		Munster, Germany Catholic Cathederal begun in 1120 AD, expanded in 1210, finished in 1230 AD The Cathederal was originally owned by the people of Munster and only in 1588 when the Jesuit Fathers were brought in to improve its University academic standing did the Cathederal revert to the Catholic Church. .....................This is the third Cathederal on the site and it was not bombed during the Second World War. (The B-17 crew assigned to bomb it mistakenly bombed another Cathederal in nearby Holland.) .....................Located only 47 miles (4 1/2 hours on horseback) SW of Lohne 22 Generations of Formann's from 1120 to 1840 would surely have stood in awe in front of it. .......................We look at it 7 generations after Clemens and Heinrich left it in abt. 1845.

  Name: This is a history of Franz's Son Heinrich's burial Cemetery in Chicago. ...............St. Henry's Cemetery founded in 1863.......Lot 5 Block 5....owner H Fortmann (Johannes Heinrich Joseph, a.k.a. Henry 1st) shows a grave site for S.E. Fortmann w/date 30 Dec ??? on the plot card...entry was made after original card written .....this implies a possible reburial from another site since the year is unknown.....Chicago City Cemetery (founded abt 1825....closed in 1870 with all but 1,000 of 20,000 disinterred for reburial) and a Catholic Cemetery founded in 1835 near 23rd and Calumet predates St Henry's Cemetery.....additionally.....this burial site contains the remains of K. A. Fortmann, 1857....next to S. E. Fortmann. Note 1857 predates the opening of St Henry's and thus also inplies a reburial from an earlier grave. These are clearly Fortmann family relatives and lying side by side with no coffin indication on the card suggests children or relatives reburied on the site of the eldest Fortmann Son, Johannes Heinrich (Henry 1st)Joseph Fortmann..........this also suggests the Fortmann's were in the Chicago area pre their appearance as land owner's on the 1870 Census...........the 1861 "Flowers" map in the Library of Congress clearly shows Clemens Fortmann owning land on Ridge & Robie St Section in 1861. They have since been found mis-indexed in the 1850 Census. Clemens & Henry therefore were in this area by 1845. Heinrich has since been found to purchase property in 1849 and marry a Lauermann sister in St Joseph's Catholic Church in Wilmette on 29 Jan 1846. His date of arrival in the United States is therefore now narrowed to 1840 to 1844.
