Maria is 7 and a 1st Grader under the tutelige of her 1st Cousin, 21 year old Josef [Gross]Fortmann, the Lerher [teacher] of Sudlohne's 1 room School House. Her little 1 year old sister Anna Maria Gertrude is always so excited when "big sis" comes home for afternoon play after school. This is the same school her 33 year old Mother, Catherina Maria, attended some 26 years ago under Lerher Anton [Gross]Fortmann, again, a 1st Cousin relative from the large GrossFortmann farm next to their's. Anton was 37 when he taught Mom.
Parents death date, ages | 7 Jan 1834 | KleineFortmann Farm |
Mother Catherine Maria died today at age 46, just 16 days before my 21st birthday. As the eldest daughter that makes me the "Frau" of the house in the eyes of my father, Ludewig, age 63, brothers Heinrich and Clemens, and younger sister Gertrude.
Immigration, year, age | 20 Feb 1839 | KleineFortmann Farm |
Father Ludewig died last month at age 67 almost exactly 5 years after Mother. Brother Heinrich is master of the house and we are discussing leaving the Farm for opportunities in America. Our Cousins have heard from their Priest brother Rev. Joseph Heinrich [Gross]Fortmann that work and opportunities of cheap land abound around Grosse Point, Illinois.
1st US Residence | 1840 | Grosse Point, IL, now Wilmette, IL |
The 3 of us, Heinrich, Clements and I have traveled to Grosse Point, IL and are residing here. We are making acquaintances quickly. The Lauermann sisters, Barbara who married John Wagner at St Mary's in 1833, and her younger sisters, Maria Catherine, age 10, and Maria are becoming close friends as is their mother Frau Anna Maria [Kreitz]Lauermann. They are from Bueschfeld in the Saarland. Their father Johnann owns the Tavern and Dry Goods Store that is just down Ridge Road from St Joseph's Catholic Church which I and my brothers attend.
Died | 30 Aug 1846 | New Trier , Cook Co. Illinois [2] |
Illness & Death | 30 Aug 1846 | Grosse Point, IL, now Wilmette, IL |
In America 6 years and age 33, Anna Maria is dead. We know not the cause but in this age it is probable that she died from infection. The Catholic Church records indicate she is buried in St Joseph's Cemetery. But today no grave site is known although I would wager she rests in Block 1 or Block 2 on or near one of the 2 the Lauermann Plots. John B (II) Lauermann shall die unexpectedly 7 months later in 1847. The other possibility is that she rests near Anton Haskamp since her sister Gertrude, back in Germany, married Anton's brother in Germany where the two of them still reside. He brother Johann Heinrich had just married Catherine Lauermann 29 Aug 1846, the day before her death. How sad, a Family wedding and a Funeral within 2 days of each other. {Might this suggest Anna Maria had a lingering death that was anticipated and she wished to be at her brother's wedding?] Was her Cousin Rev Heinrich [Gross]Fortmann who was to be the 2nd Pastor of St Joe's at Anna Maria's funeral. I do not know. But, in this close, horse-back traveling community he was not distant.
