2. History of Sudlohne Region Estates in the Region: 1 hectacre = 2.47 acres................... 1. Kokenge estate: 85 hectacres = 210 acres - located in Ehrendorf, Gr - residents belonged to the castle of Dinklage and provided allegiance, taxes and manpower for wars in return for protection. The Kokenge name is from the tribe name Chauken or Koken. It's meaning is lost to history.................... 2. Polking "estate" 98.38 hectacres = 243 acres located in Sudlohne - the family home was in Lohne with additional holdings in Nordlohne as late as 1840...............Grossfortmann Farm, ? hectacres located in Sudlohne adjacent to Polking...................... 4. Kleinefortman Farm, ? hectacre located in Sudlohne adjacent to Polking and Grossfortmann - abt 1/4 size of Gross farm. Most farms were less than 50 hectacres or 135 acres...................... Abutting the Fortmann - Polking Farms was, and is today, a Middle Ages shrine to St Ann. This hill has the the "Stations of the Cross winding up to its top with a crucifix there. A sacred spring at its base has miracles attributed to it history. It appears on today's maps of the area..................... The mountains near Sudlohne were named Kokengen Bergen. They were small prominent hills in sharp contrast to the general flat land of the area which was broken up by great marshes formed from the receeding glacial ice................... The inhabitants were known for their aggressiveness and beauty. These tribes had not intermarried over the millenium and did not therefore have Roman genetics or other tribal traits. Of concern in the 1200-1700's was genetic mix. It is not uncommon to find 1st cousin marriages. 
3. Johann Peter Schmidt, b. 25 February 1788.......Literate? There has always been a question as to whether the Schmidt name of our lineage was Schmidt or Schmit.............We now know the birth and ancestral name was Schmit(t). The Passport spelling: Schmidt (created by a government clerk in Trier) and the Americanized name Smith.

BAKUM, no Fortman Surnames for 1805 or 1820's.... STEINFELD, Fortmann Surnames but no match to family.... DAMME, to be researched.... HOLDORF, to be researched....
